My friends wanted to make a summer project together. However, because of internal conflicts and clashing schedules, this game was never finished. We were inspired by Detroit: Become Human, Tangle Tower, Duck Detective and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box.
My contributions included game design, systems design, character design, 3D art, concept art, and narrative design.
The project started with every member thinking of simple game pitches and presenting them to the whole team, we then all voted what our favourite. As I am obsessed with true crime, I prompted a murder mystery telling the true story of Jack the Ripper. I thought all the hints were so intriguing; however, since it is a real crime with not all clues making sense, it would have been too difficult to plot a murderer and pin all the clues on them. This led us to create a fictional small town with horrible secrets lying beneath.
As part of the narrative team, I was so excited to think of murders connected with a theme, and having personal connections with the characters created. I wanted the enemy to have a connection with the player, to later backstab them and challenge the player’s morals.
The goal for the game was to make all assets as low poly indie game, maintaining somewhat simple shapes so we could prioritize on narrative and puzzle mechanics.
It is unfortunate that this game never came to be, but it makes sense; as our scope was way too big, and we dove deep into the narrative, ignoring the player experience. If I could change something in the process, we needed someone to keep us on track. We attempted to meetup every week and schedule milestones by importance, but we gradually stopped production. Luckily, I learned many ways to organize a team in 2nd year, but this
